Definite Article "THE"







The definite article THE is the most frequent word in English.


We use the definite article in front of a noun when we believe the hearer/reader knows exactly what we are referring to.



1. We use THE for the Thing which is One 

  • The Pope is visiting Africa. 
  • The Sun is very hot today. 
  • The king of India was very brave. 

2. We use THE with Superlative Adjectives

  • He is the smartest kid in the class 
  • It is the oldest school in the city. 

3. We use THE when there is only in that place or surroundings

  • We live in a small town next to the hospital. = There is only one hospital. 
  • Mom, can i please the video game? = The single video game in the house. 
  • Look at the beautiful girl over there. = The beautiful girl i am pointing at. 

4. We use THE with adjectives like (Rich, Poor, Elderly, Unemployed) to talk about group of people

  • Life used to be very difficult for the poor in India. 
  • I Think Poor should be given more opportunities. 
  • We should work more for the disabled. 

5. We use THE for something we have already mentioned

  • A man was murdered yesterday on his way home. The man was a single father. 
  • Police is searching for a thief who stole a car from PM house. The car belongs to the PM. 

6. We use THE with countries whose name includes KINGDOM, STATES Or REPUBLIC 

  • The United Kingdom 
  • The Kingdom of Nepal 
  • The United States 
  • The People's Republic Of China 
7. We use THE with countries with plural nouns as their names

  • The Philippines 
  • The Netherlands 

8. We use THE with mountain Ranges, canals, oceans, rivers, group of islands

  • The Himalaya 
  • The Atlantic 
  • The Amazon 
  • The Panama Canal 
  • The Atlantic Ocean 

9. We use THE with Newspapers

  • The Times Of India 
  • The Hindustan Times 
  • The New York times 
  • The Washington Post 

10. We use THE before well known buildings and work of arts 

  • The Taj Mahal 
  • The Mona Lisa 
  • The Empire State Building 

11. We use THE before hotel, pubs and restaurants

  • The Taj Hotel 
  • The Hilton 
  • The New York Bar 
  • The Ritz 
Note: We do not use THE if hotel's or restaurant's is named after their owners, e.g. The Brown's Hotel.


11. We use THE in front of family names 

  • The Mehtas 
  • The Clintons 
  • The Obamas
