Telephone Phrasal Verbs

What are Phrasal Verbs? A phrasal verb is a combination of words (a verb + a preposition or verb +adverb) that when used together, usually take on a different meaning to that of the original verb.
Telephone Phrasal Verbs can make you sound like a native speaker.
1. Break Up: To become inaudible over the telephone
  1. I can not hear you properly; Your voice is breaking up.
  2. I had to hang up because his voice was breaking up.
2. Cut Off: To hang up the phone
  1. Don’t cut me off when I am talking.
  2. John cut me off when i was talking to him.
  3. We got cut off.
  4. If we get cut off, I will call you back.
3. Hang On/Hold On: To wait for a short time
  1. Hang on! Let me give you his number.
  2. Can you please hang? I am getting another call.
4. Hang Up/Get Off: To end the phone call and put the phone down
  1. "‘Thanks,’ she says, and hangs up"
  2. I hung up after receiving the message.
  3. She hung up on me when i was trying to talk to her.
  4. Natalie, please get off the phone. I need to call my work.
  5. My boss has just returned and I have to get off the phone.
5. Get Through: To succeed in talking to someone on the phone
  1. I tried calling her mobile phone, but I couldn't GET THROUGH.
  2. He couldn’t get through – the line was engaged.
  3. They finally got through to John on his mobile.
6. Speak Up: To talk more loudly or plainly
  1. You'll have to speak up, I can't hear you.
  2. Stop muttering and speak up!
  3. You'll have to speak up a bit if you want everyone to hear you
7. Pick Up: To answer the phone call
  1. Phone is ringing. Can you please pick it up?
  2. I tried to call her twice, but she did not pick up
8. Put Through: To connect a person using a phone to the person they want to speak to:
  1. Could you put me through to customer services, please?
  2. put me through to the police office, please’
JOHN: Hi! May I speak to the manager?
JULIA: Sure. I will put you through. One moment please.
9. Hold On: To connect a person using a phone to the person they want to speak to
  1. Could you put me through to customer services, please?
  2. put me through to the police office, please’
10. Call someone Up/Phone: Make a phone call
  1. I need to call my sister up. I haven’t heard from her in weeks, and I really hope she is OK.
  2. Will you call him up tomorrow?
  3. I forgot to phone my mother yesterday.
